Introduction

In college you will be tasked with finding, evaluating, and using information. These are core skills you will need for success in school, on the job, and in life.

This LibGuide on research and information literacy (RAIL) provides you with:

• background information on research in general
• some practice exercises to demonstrate how to find, evaluate, and use information
• tips and strategies to get started with your research

Getting Started

Getting started is what students find most difficult about research. Some of the adjectives students use to describe how they feel about research are:

• fear
• angst
• tired
• excited
• anxious
• annoyed
• disgusted
• intrigued
• confused
• overwhelmed

A lot of your research will happen online, which doesn't mean a couple of Google searches. So where do you start?

This FYES 1000 section on Research and Information Literacy is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be successful with finding, evaluating, and using information for your research.

Visit the library:

• The place with the technology and resources to get work done.
• Borrow books
• Learn about GALILEO and other online resources
• Get a good start on your search for information by using LibGuides
• Photocopy, or scan to your flash drive
• Study alone or in groups
• Use a study room
• Hang out with friends
• Use a computer for your homework and assignments
• Attend a workshop to learn about how to research and where to find and use quality information
• Get help from Librarians
