Citing Authors

The number and type of authors will impact the format of the citations on your works cited page as well as your in-text citations.  Use the examples found on the tabs above to help you correctly cite the author(s) of your source.

Single Author


Author's Last Name, First Name. Title. Publication Information.

Note: If authors of sources on your works cited page have the same last name, add the first initial of each author's name to the in-text citations.

Two to Three Authors

Grigsby and Medici suggest, "Many dogs that develop zinc toxicosis can recover quickly if diagnosis and therapy are initiated in a timely manner" (498).

 

Four or More Authors

"The rejection of new food technologies by consumers may lead to regulations prohibiting their broader use..." (Bruce et al. 425).

 

Multiple Works by the Same Author


Use three hypens to replace the authors name in subsequent citations.  Place in order by the first important word of the title.

Gordon, Robert. It Came From Memphis. New York: Pocket Books, 1995. Print.

---. Respect Yourself: Stax Records and the Soul Explosion. New York: Bloomsbury USA, 2014. Print.

 

Multiple Works by the Same Author


Add the title or a shortened version of the title to the in-text citation

According to Gordon, "Record distribution was, and remains, a tricky business." (Respect Yourself 7).

Rock and roll was ground breaking in Memphis as it "...rejected the idea of enforced segregation, mixing cultures as it mixed musical genres" (Gordon, Memphis 2).
