Call Numbers

Call numbers Gwinnett Tech Library are combinations of letters and numbers that you find on the spine or cover of a book if the spine is too narrow. The call number tells you where to find the book on the shelf - it is the address for the item.

The Gwinnett Tech Library uses the Library of Congress Classification system, a combination of letters and numbers. The Dewey Decimal classification system uses only numbers. As illustrated below, the call numbers mean something in the classification scheme. But they also simply tell you exactly where the item is located on the library shelf.

  • PS = American Literature
  • 3511 = 1900-1960
  • .A86 = code for William Faulkner
  • A65 = code for the title of this work, Absalom, Absalom
  • 1986 = the publication date of the edition for this work
