Research I: Library Basics

Participants will have an overview of library services and the resources available.  The workshop incorporates hands-on exercises designed to gain experience using library resources.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • The research process & approaches to managing information
  • Becoming familiar with the Library Catalog/Home Page & LibGuides
  • Using key words or subject headings to search
  • Finding books - searching the online catalog
  • Finding ebooks - accessing & searching ebook collections
  • GALILEO - what is it, how to choose a database
  • Finding full text articles - conducting a basic search in an articles databases
  • Differentiating between scholarly (or academic or peer-reviewed) & popular publications
  • Evaluating information - thinking critically about print & electronic sources
  • Citing sources & avoiding plagiarism
  • Who to ask or where to look for research help

Participants in this workshop will learn to:

  • Recognize the need for information sources in order to complete college level assignments
  • Identify the library web page & LibGuides as a gateways to information resources
  • Identify ways to get assistance from a librarian
  • Indicate how information found in books, periodicals, and web sites differs
  • Identify various formats in which information is available
  • Locate books by author, title or subject
  • Locate other materials, such as DVDs or reserves
  • View his/her patron record and renew books online
  • Connect to e-books
  • Perform a basic search in one of the multidisciplinary periodical databases
  • Retrieve a full-text article
  • Express a basic definition of plagiarism
  • Identify the elements that go into a citation
