The laboratory notebook is an essential tool all science related careers. The lab notebook is the primary record of experiments. It is vital to learn how to keep a properly organized notebook for this course and your future research endeavors. Organic notebooks are different than general chemistry notebooks.
Every instructor, class and discipline has unique lab notebook keeping rules. This guide contains the basic lab notebook rules for this course:
Student Name
Organic Chemistry Laboratory Notebook
Gwinnett Technical College
Start Date: ______ End Date: _____
- Right hand (odd numbered) pages are used for writing objective (purpose), special instructions/warnings for chemicals, pre-lab procedures and conclusions
- Left hand (even numbered) pages are used for diagrams, physical data, observations, modifications, calculations and data recording

Experiment Title: Describes lab content |
Physical Data of all chemicals: (use the CRC Handbook to note density, concentration, molar mass, solubility, hazards, precautions, etc.) |

Modifications to procedure: |
Balanced Equation/ Reaction Mechanism (calculate the theoretical yield of the reaction) |
|
|
Calculations: |
Procedures/Experimentation: detailed protocol on how to conduct the experiment **DO NOT COPY THE LAB HANDOUT WORD FOR WORD. ** 1) Write the procedures in your own words, with as much detail as required for you to understand the steps you will do in the lab. 2) It is helpful to write it in a stepwise manner, so you can keep track of which step you are on during lab. 3) If changes are made to any step, record the change on the left hand page. |

|
|
Results: clearly state key results, % Yield, spectra analysis, etc. |
|
|
|
Conclusions: Sum up the experiment. Give a brief explanation of results. |
*NOTE: YOUR LAB NOTEBOOK WILL NOT ALWAYS BE NEAT!*
