What is Research?

Research is a Process

Conducting research is a process. It starts with a question, continues with curiosity an involves a number of steps. Sometimes you complete one step before moving to the next. There may be times when you return to a previous step or complete multiple steps simultaneously.

Steps in the Research Process

Breaking down the research process into steps is a strategy that works well with almost any topic and can be adapted as needed. you can omit steps, repeat steps, or rearrange steps as necessary.

  • Understand your assignment requirements
  • Choose a topic
  • Get background information and a general overview of the subject
  • Focus your topic
  • Consider your resource options 
  • Select and use the appropriate resources/sources
  • Keep a log of your research and cite as you go
  • Use, organize, and communicate information
  • Comply with legal, ethical, and moral standards

It is important to remember that researching for papers, assignments, work, and or life needs takes time. It helps to be organized.

  • Make a note of all your due dates and deadlines
  • Keep track of what you have read and document your sources as you go
  • Take notes and keep them in order
