Learning Objectives

After completing this exercise, students will be able to:

  • Select a specific database that is hosted in the GALILEO website
  • Browse a list of topics in Opposing Viewpoints in Context database
  • Select a specific article and save the citation
  • Explain what it means to cite your sources
  • Understand the importance of evaluating information
  • How to reach the library for help in finding credible information

Step 1: Select the Database.

For this assignment you will select an article from the database, Opposing Viewpoints in Context. GALILEO hosts access to Gwinnett Tech Library resources.

Click on the link below for direct access to Opposing Viewpoints in Context. A new window will open.

Step 2: Find the list of "Issues" or Topics.

When you are in Opposing Viewpoints in Context, click on the link that says "Browse Issues."

Step 3: Select a topic of interest.

Look at the list of "Issues" and select one that interests you. Click on the link to find more information on this issue or topic.

Step 4: Find the "Viewpoints."

Look at the page and find the heading "Viewpoints". Click on the link that gives you the option to "View All."

Step 5: Select a Viewpoint Essay to read and summarize.

These "Viewpoints" are articles and essays that have been published in a variety of credible sources. These credible articles and essays are acceptable for your ENGL 097 & 098 assignment.

Select a "Viewpoint Essay" that has a yellow box on the right hand side of the results list. This is an intermediate level article and will be long enough for you to summarize.

Step 6: Read the article

You can read the article on your computer screen.

You can also email, print , or download the article or save it to read later. Look at the "Tools" section on the right side of the screen.

Step 7: Create a citation for your article.

Scroll down to the bottom of your article to find the "Source Citation." You will need to provide your instructor with this citation.

Copy and paste the citation into a document that you can use later when finishing your assignment.
